The Lost Border Rap

Oct 11, 2012 Breaking It Down

My name is Edd I guess you know,
I’m all dressed up like a GI Joe.

Driving my jeep along the Grenze,
Looking at the Russians over cross the fence.

Cause I’m Border Rappin’
Uh huh, uh huh yeah.

19 seconds is what they say I got
After the balloon goes up and this shit gets hot

But I don’t care ‘cause I’m a scout
Kicking Russian ass is what I’m about

Cause I’m Border Rappin’
Uh huh, uh huh yeah.

“Border Patrol Rap”
Circa 1987 Bamberg, Germany
Eagle Troop 2nd Squadron 2nd US Armored Cavalry drinking song
Author Unknown but not forgotten

Yes, I did sing this part in a bar, on a table while drunk and I am curiously proud of that fact. Maybe thats why after 25 years I still remember how it started. Never did have to kick any Russian ass, but I know I scared the shit outta a couple of guys. Honestly, I'm really glad it worked out that way.

Of foot patrol with squad from E Troop 2/2 ACR

On foot patrol with my squad along the 114 kilometer long section of the East/West German border that 2nd Squadron 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment was responsible for in 1986.

1986 East German Border Near Camp Hof Border Surveillance Station

East German surveillance tower behind the border fence. No one lived near the border in this small city, it was like a ghost town all the time.

This is where information stopped in the Cold War. Little towns cut in half by an arbitrary line drawn on a map by some politicians who had never been to any of the villages and they knew none of the people they tried to divide. This was a wall that tried to keep humans from other humans; it tried to corral human thoughts, hopes and aspriations of dignity. It failed. I was a small part of this massive geoplolitical opera that is now a rusted memory.

Good riddance...

About the Author Edd Webb

I am the descendant of Appalachian storytellers. Which is a fancy way of saying that bullshit is in my DNA. I left the hills and hollows of southwestern Virginia and went out to look at the big bright world a long time ago. I wanted to know how things really worked. Between then and now I've lived and learned, fought and fled; winning some and losing others. I found good & evil in the hearts of men and love in the heart of a woman. My kids keep my mind sharp and my dogs remind me to try to be the person they think I am. I am a soldier, the son of a sailor and a redneck by birth. I was a roughneck by necessity and have become a philosopher by aspiration. I have a few good friends and count myself lucky to know them. I might be wrong but I won't lie. Unless you ask me if you look fat in those pants.

I Like These The Most

At least for right now… these memes are like little pieces of myself. It seems more than a little narcissistic to have favorite parts of yourself. But if you insist... these are my favorite parts... right now. I am a fickle master.
